The Karalappakkam Society for Rural and Sustainable Development (KSRSD) is a secular non-profit organization engaged in welfare and developmental activities in the rural areas of Tamil Nadu. KSRSD works on the premise of Sustainable Development, with a pro-nature, pro-poor and pro-women approach. Global Handwashing Day 2008

In order to be a part of the global effort to make handwashing with soap an automatic behavior for every individual KSRSD observed the global handwashing day on October 15th by organizing a program for the children under 12 years. Following an illustration, all the students of Panchayat Union Elementary School in Vengal (Thiruvallur district, Tamilnadu) who participated in the program demonstrated the practice of handwashing with soap.

Tsunami response
KSRSD was quick enough to respond to the national disaster by providing counseling services to those affected and helping to restore their normal lives. Provision of household articles and educational materials provided by KSRSD were a great solace for them and the fishing nets and other accessories supplied by KSRSD helped to restore their lives to normal economic activities.

The Tsunami tragedy has opened an eye to the dismal living conditions of the fishing community.
